Leh

A practical beginning to a Ladakh journey

Explore Leh as a base for acclimatization, markets, heritage, monasteries and day trips.

Leh is where many journeys begin, but it should not be treated merely as a transit point. Its slower first days offer time to acclimatize, explore local neighbourhoods and understand the geography before travelling farther.

Leh and surrounding mountains

Use the first days wisely

Keep arrival day light. Short walks, hydration, rest and a flexible schedule are more useful than trying to cover every landmark immediately.

What to explore

  • Leh market and nearby lanes
  • Palace and old-town viewpoints
  • Shanti Stupa and local museums
  • Day trips to nearby monasteries and villages

Suggested stay

Two or three nights at the beginning of a trip gives most visitors more room to adjust before driving across high passes.
